Elementary School

GRADES K–5
Where curiosity becomes confidence.
St. Peter’s elementary program is built on a strong academic core, enriched by activities and experiences that develop each child’s God-given gifts. Our licensed Illinois teachers are dedicated to knowing each student and partnering with parents because we believe education is most successful when home and school work together. With small class sizes, your child will receive the individual attention that makes a real difference.
CURRICULUM FOR GRADES K–5
Connecting students to Christ while pursuing excellence.
We are passionately dedicated to the pursuit of educational excellence in a Christ-centered environment. Our curriculum enables students to courageously meet new challenges, joyfully serve, and develop a lifelong love for Jesus and others.
Religion
Using Concordia’s Enduring Faith curriculum in kindergarten and One in Christ for upper grades, students explore Old and New Testament stories, memorize Scripture, and gather weekly for Chapel. Every day begins with a devotion, and our Christian faith is incorporated into every area of instruction.
Math
We use Sadlier Math to guide your student from hands-on understanding of addition and subtraction facts to fractions, decimals, algebra concepts, and geometry by the end of 5th grade. Through explicit instruction and real-world problem solving connected to STEAM, students develop both mathematical thinking and confidence.
Reading & Language Arts
We use McGraw Hill’s Wonders program to develop phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills simultaneously. Students read a wide variety of literary forms, including fiction, nonfiction, biography, poetry, and historical fiction, to build toward writing narratives, research reports, and compositions.
Spelling & Handwriting
Spelling instruction follows the phonetic patterns students are developing in reading and reinforces the connection between how words sound and how they’re written. We teach the D'Nealian method to transition naturally from printing to cursive, which is practiced through 8th grade.
Science
Students explore life science, earth science, physical science, and health through hands-on investigations and inquiry-based learning. By 5th grade, students have the opportunity to dissect owl pellets, build simple machines, and work through large-scale STEM projects that combine science, technology, engineering, and math.
Social Studies
Elementary students discover their world by first exploring family and community in the early grades before studying state and national history, world geography, and American history by the end of 5th grade.
Spanish
Spanish instruction begins in kindergarten and builds continuously through 8th grade. In the elementary years, we focus on oral communication. Students practice numbers, colors, greetings, and actions through conversation, songs, and games. By 5th grade, students begin formal instruction that continues through middle school, giving them a solid foundation for language learning.
Physical Education
Students have physical education two days a week, with recess every day. From the fundamentals in the early grades to team sports and fitness concepts as students grow, students learn that our bodies are a gift from God that is worth caring for well.
Music
Using StageWorthy curriculum, students develop foundational music skills through singing, playing, movement, listening, and creating. Our hope is that students leave St. Peter with an appreciation for the role music plays both in the life of the church and their own lives.
Art
Elementary art explores lines, shapes, colors, value, texture, and perspective using a wide variety of media and techniques. Students study the work of prominent artists and respond by making their own creations. Our students learn that art is a form of thinking and expression.
Technology
Students are equipped to navigate an increasingly complex digital world with skill and responsibility. We help students develop proficiency with Google Suite and typing skills. We emphasize using technology as a tool for learning.
