Learning Support

RESOURCE & ENRICHMENT

Meeting every learner where they are.

At St. Peter, we understand every child is uniquely created with a different learning style. Our resource and enrichment programs ensure no student falls through the cracks and all students are challenged when they are ready for more. Both programs are led by Mrs. Karen Young, our full-time resource and enrichment teacher, whose 30 years of experience makes her uniquely qualified to serve every student.

RESOURCE

Support for every learner.

Our full-time resource teacher works with students across all grade levels to provide the individualized support that helps every child succeed. Services include:

  • Implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans for students with documented learning needs.
  • Development of individualized learning or accommodation plans in collaboration with classroom teachers and parents.
  • Small group and one-on-one support for students who are struggling with any concept.
  • Academic intervention for students who score 30% or lower on MAP reading or math assessments, with parent permission.

Resource support is not a separate track. Your child remains fully part of their classroom community. Our goal is always to help each student grow alongside their peers.

ENRICHMENT FOR GRADES 1–5

For students ready for more.

Students who score 90% or higher on MAP reading or math assessments and receive classroom teacher approval are invited to join our Enrichment program. Students may qualify for reading, math, or both. Services include:

  • Higher-level comprehension questions and advanced reading material that challenge students beyond grade level.
  • Greek and Latin root study to expand vocabulary and build strong analytical reading skills.
  • Book study discussions that develop critical thinking and the ability to defend and articulate ideas.
  • Advanced math skills, logic puzzles, and mathematical theory that challenge students who are ready to think differently about numbers.

Enrichment meets in small groups and runs alongside the regular school day. Students who grow into eligibility during the year are welcomed as soon as they qualify.

Meet Mrs. Karen Young

Mrs. Young brings more than 30 years of teaching experience to St. Peter, having worked with children ages 3 through 22 across a wide range of learning needs in public special education. After retiring from that career, she joined St. Peter as the full-time resource and enrichment teacher. Mrs. Young combines her expertise in differentiated instruction with her Lutheran faith in a setting where both are equally valued. She considers this chapter of her career a natural extension of her calling to teach and serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our full-time resource teacher works with students across all grade levels to provide the individualized support that helps every child succeed.

Will St. Peter honor my child’s IEP or 504 Plan from their current school?
Yes. St. Peter’s full-time resource teacher works directly with IEPs and 504 Plans for students with documented learning needs. We collaborate closely with parents and classroom teachers to implement each plan and ensure your child receives the support they are entitled to. If your child currently receives services through their public school, we encourage you to share their documentation during the enrollment process so we can prepare appropriately before their first day. To discuss your child’s specific needs before enrolling, contact our office at (847) 885-3350.
How does resource support work?
We offer academic intervention for students who score 30% or lower on MAP reading or math assessments, with parent permission. We follow IEPs and 504 Plans, create learning or accommodation plans, and help students whenever they struggle with any concept. Support includes small group and one-on-one support.
What does St. Peter offer for advanced students?
Our enrichment program serves students in grades 1 through 8 who demonstrate advanced ability in reading, math, or both. Qualification is based on MAP assessment scores. Students who score 90% or higher and receive classroom teacher approval are invited to participate. Enrichment is not a separate classroom or pull-out program that removes your child from their peers. It is small group instruction that extends learning beyond grade level through advanced reading material, Greek and Latin roots, book study discussions, logic puzzles, and higher-order math challenges. Students who grow into eligibility during the school year are welcomed as soon as they qualify. There is no waiting until the following year.
How does my child qualify for learning support services?
If your student has an IEP or 504 plan, we work to implement it within our classrooms. For students without an existing plan, we partner closely with parents and teachers to determine whether one is needed. This process may include outside testing to help identify the right supports. We also work alongside School District 54 to develop and coordinate these plans.
